Maintaining an air conditioner is a must do, even for those of us in Maryland. After a brutal winter, the last thing we want is an unbearably hot summer. We’ve previously written about tips for keeping your HVAC more efficient and want to expand on that even further by giving you this must read guide to all things AC.

How to Choose an Air Conditioner

There are three general types of air conditioners including the standard central unit, window unit, and ductless mini splits. They range in cost, function, and energy usage. The last factor is important as air conditioners use a good deal of energy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, choosing the right air conditioner and making smart usage decisions can reduce the energy used by your air conditioner by 20% to 50%.

Choose your unit by considering the factors below.

  1. Central Air Conditioning – These traditional units are located inside and/or outside the property and use ducts to force cool air to the entire interior. They can last for 15 to 20 years and come with an installation cost of anywhere from $8,000 to $25,000 depending on what a customer wants and needs.
  2. Ductless Mini Splits – These systems use an indoor air handling unit that is connected to a condenser located on the exterior of the property. The systems do not use air ducts, which makes them an excellent option for properties without existing ductwork. Ductless mini splits can last for up to 15 years and can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $14,000 to install. Mini splits are also great for home additions, a cold master bedroom, garages, MIL suites, etc.
  3. Window Air Conditioning – These units are attached to the window or windows via screws and nails. They can be often be powered by a simple plug. Window units can only cool the room they are installed in, which can be beneficial depending on your needs. They last for approximately 15 years and cost a few hundred dollars to properly install.
  4. You may also choose an evaporative cooler if your climate supports it.

Maintaining an Air Conditioner

No matter what type of system you choose, it is essential to properly maintain it. This ensures the system performs at its peak for as long as possible. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for items such as filter replacement schedule, recommended tune ups, and more.
